Fish For All Research and Training Centre, Poompuhar
Born from the resilience efforts after the 2004 Tsunami, the Fish for All Research and Training Centre in Tamil Nadu supports sustainable coastal livelihoods.
Key initiatives include:
- Resource management and disaster preparedness training.
- Empowering fisherwomen through poverty alleviation programs.
- Strengthening value chains from capture/culture to commercialization.
Facilities:
- Modern Fish Processing Plant (HACCP certified).
- Training and accommodation facilities for 100+ trainees.
- Solar drying units, chill rooms, and flake ice production units for value-added fish products.
- Village Knowledge Centre offering real-time weather updates and fishing zone forecasts.
Focus: The Centre trains fisher communities in hygienic fish handling, value addition (like prawn pickles, dry fish, shrimp powder), and small enterprise development through women's SHGs — helping them secure better incomes and safer livelihoods.
