MSSRF scientists attend workshop on marine fishery and ocean state advisory services at INCOIS

October 9, 2018: 17 staff members headed by Dr. S. Velvizhi, Principal Scientist and Head of Fish for All Research and Training centre visited the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Hyderabad on October 4th and 5th, 2018 to receive hands on training on their various operational services on Marine fishery and Ocean State advisory. The training program provided the staff with an insight to the science and technology of Potential Fishing Zones, Ocean State Forecast and Disaster alerts. With most of the staff working in the outreach and scaling up of the “Fisher Friend” application, which gets data from INCOIS, this training provided a platform to raise queries, discuss ideas and to learn new concepts. The training had hands-on sessions, lab visits and lectures. The various topics that were discussed included the latest marine advisory dissemination mechanisms such as GAGAN and NAVIC, Tsunami early warning service, storm surge warnings, search and rescue aid tool, oil spill advisory system and the latest wave rider buoy programme. At the end of two days a valedictory session was held, where Dr. Balakrishnan Nair T.M, scientist and Head ISG, INCOIS, stated that this sort of a training program should become an every year event, as it gives an opportunity to receive feedback from the field, which is critical for them to fine tune their research, he added that he looks forward to associating with M.S Swaminthan Research Foundation in the years to come.
