This project, implemented in the Mayiladuthurai district of Tamil Nadu, focuses on two coastal villages — Vanagiri and Madathukuppam covering 1800 households. The main objective of the programe is to strengthen the capacity of fishers to engage effectively in sustainable fisheries co-management initiatives.
To achieve this, the project introduces several key activities:
• Scientific awareness to build basic understanding of marine ecosystems
• Identification of key issues affecting fisheries and local livelihoods
• Formation and promotion of co-management committees to involve communities in decision-making related to fisheries management
• Development of village-specific co-management plans for sustainable practices
• Livelihood training programe to improve skills and income opportunities to actively participate in the co-management practices
• Demonstration of solar dryers to improve post-harvest processing
• Cross learning workshops at the state and international level to share experiences and knowledge
This project promotes collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and local leadership in managing marine resources sustainably.
