Blue Carbon Solutions through Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) for Strengthening the Livelihood Needs of Coastal Fishing Communities in the Palk Bay Region of India

Launched in September 2024 with the support of Stolt Tankers, Netherland focuses on introducing Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) as an innovative solution for both livelihood enhancement and environmental sustainability in the Palk Bay region. By promoting IMTA, the project aims to create a sustainable and diversified income source for coastal fishing communities in villages like Meenavar Kudiiruppu and Munaikadu in Palk Bay. At its core, the project is designed to build the capacity of local communities in IMTA practices, establishing both forward and backward linkages to ensure long-term success. A key objective is to explore the potential of IMTA as a carbon sequestration method, harnessing its environmental benefits while also improving livelihoods.

The project includes comprehensive resource management, where appropriate culture methods are selected for aquaculture, alongside robust environmental monitoring (focusing on water quality, salinity, etc.). Through continuous training, capacity building, and active community participation, to empower the local population, creating a sustainable and scalable model for blue carbon solutions in the region.
