Location: Jeypore, Kundra, Boipariguda and Koraput blocks of Koraput district, Odisha
Funder: DBT-RTC –Govt. of India
Project Period: 2 years six months (Feb 2023 – August 2025)
Project Overview:
Availability of quality seeds is a felt need. MSSRF’s experience has shown that introducing quality seeds together with improved cultivation practices increases productivity and income. The biodiversity rich region also makes seed production of local landraces of paddy a potential area for improving the economic situation of the region while conserving biodiversity. Drawing on available bio-resources, farmers will be capacitated to adopt modern technologies of quality seed production. This will include pure seed collection from mother panicles, seed germination test, organic seed treatment, preparation of raised bed nursery, proper land development, application of FYM, botanical extracts like- beejamruta, jeebamruta and handikhata. Modern technologies like Line Transplanting (LT) shall be introduced. Use of women friendly agri implements like, cono weeder, row marker, power sprayer, power winnower, power/pedal thresher will be promoted. Efficient practices based on their indigenous knowledge will also be drawn on.
Technological intervention to implement the project.
Seed Treatment, Raised bed Nursery, Land preparation, Green Manuring, Line Transplanting, INM, IPM & IDM and Introduction of women friendly agri-equipment’s.
Objectives:
- To make available seeds of prominent landraces of rice (1000quintals) to cater to the requirement of around 10000 farming households.
- To develop community based entrepreneurship/ institutions for promotion, popularization and commercialization of farmer’s seeds through self-certification and branding.
- To conserve and promote (enhancing productivity and income) prominent landraces of rice through sustainable agriculture practices
Major Activities:
- Selection of cluster of villages and collection of bench mark information:
- Collection and analysis of soil samples:
- Collection of crops and cropping system details – season wise:
- Agricultural Interventions like seed production and practices of LT in rice, INM, IPM, IDM and post-harvest technologies with WSHGs, PGs and FPOs
- Demonstration:
- Exploration of Rice Germplasm:
- Participatory Conservation System:
- Participatory Varietal Selection:
- Production of TFL seeds:
- Women empowerment:
- Role of Rural Youth Incubators:.
- Capacity building at hub level, cluster level and field level training programmes and exposure visits will be organised to impart skills on in-situ soil and water management, improved package of practices on crop production, seed production technologies, INM, IPM, IDM, leadership and entrepreneurial skills for FPOs, WSHGs and rural youth incubators.
Impact:
- 1000 tribal farmers engaged in production of local landraces of paddy
- 100 Rural Youth Incubators
- 20 WSHGs (200 women) trained in seed production and processing activities
- 10000 farm households expected to be benefited from the seeds produced
- Availability of quality landraces of paddy seeds at FPOs and WSHGs level for conservation of paddy’s
- Skilled developed through training and demonstration of alternative seed system model.
