Enhancing Production and Productivity of millets, oil seed and pulses in Odisha through an Alternative Seed System Model for Production and Supply of Improved Seed Varieties

Project Overview: 

Enhance the production and productivity of millet, pulses and oilseeds through the use of better seeds and improved cultivation practices. Strengthen local capability for production and supply of quality seed at the community level. Introduce drudgery-free seed/grain processing technology and assist women towards promotion of consumption of these grains and enhancing income by building value chain. Create awareness on the importance of millets and oil seed  for food and nutritional security.

Enhance production and productivity by 40-45%. Supply of good quality finger millet,green gram improved variety seed at reasonable price and on time. Tribal farmers get pure quality seed at affordable price in own village.  Farmers getting higher yields and more returns in the SMI method in finger millet cultivation system than the traditional cultivation by providing an alternate livelihoods and food security. The implementation of this model resulted in 45 % increase in the production of finger millet with minimum cultivation cost and improved agronomic practices. Creating awareness among the farmers on the importance of millets, pulses and oil seeds in the dietary  requirement through training SHG/ farmers for production  and value addition. Annual income of inhabitants of the area  increased. Well trained 56 lead farmers in the project area earn asset to serve as para extension workers.
