Preparation of People’s Biodiversity Register (PBR) and Reconstitution of Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs)

Project Overview: 

People’s Biodiversity Register (PBR) is a comprehensive document that records the biodiversity of a specific area, including plants, animals, microorganisms, and the associated traditional knowledge, practices, and cultural heritage. This project focuses on the reconstitution of 14 Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs) and the preparation of 14 People’s Biodiversity Registers (PBRs) in the Gupteswar Biodiversity Heritage Site. The initiative aims to strengthen biodiversity conservation, promote sustainable use of biological resources, and fair and equitable sharing of benefits and prevent bio-piracy and ctreate awareness among the community regarding the availability of bio resources and its importance, implement the ABS as mandated by the Biological Diversity Act, 2002.

Objectives:

  • To document local biodiversity and associated traditional knowledge through community participation.
  • To promote conservation, sustainable use, and fair and equitable benefit-sharing as mandated under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002.

Major Activities:

  • Reconstitution of 14 Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs) in the Gupteswar Biodiversity Heritage Site.
  • Documentation of biodiversity data, including local flora, fauna, microorganisms, and associated traditional knowledge.
  • Preparation and finalization of the People’s Biodiversity Register (PBR) for the identified area.
  • Submission of the finalized PBR to the Odisha Biodiversity Board, Bhubaneswar.
  • Conducting awareness programs and community consultations to encourage public participation in biodiversity conservation.
  • Awareness on community plantation programme. 

Impact of the Project:

  • People Biodiversity register will be available in the end of the projet. 
  • Enhance knowledge of the community and BMC member on sustainable conservation of the bio-resourec available in this region. 
  • Tree plantation programme will implement at BMC level and link to the local panchayat. 
  • Biodiversity of this region will documented and available with OBB and BMC at Panchayat level.    

Fund Allocation: ₹ 12,97,500/-
