Development of propagation methods on selected riparian plants for reviving riverine eco-system of Kabani river basin in Wayanad

Location: Wayanad

Funded by: Kerala State Biodiversity Board

Duration: 2 years from 01-02-2024 to 31-01-2026

Objectives/Description

  • Restoration of riverine ecosystem in collaboration with LSGIs and BMCs
  • Collection, multiplication and distribution of planting materials of 25 riparian tree species from its natural habitats.
  • Raise 50000-75000 seedlings of 25 riparian tree species, hand it over to the selected BMCs of Wayanad district having riparian areas, and facilitate the planting and conservation of in collaboration with LSGIs.
  • Sensitize the LSGIs, BMCs and general public at large and harness the coordinated efforts of all concerned for the effective implementation and sustainability.
  • Equip, empower and strengthen BMCs for ensuring the active participation in planning and implementing natural resource management programmes.
  • Establish linkages with line departments and likeminded institutions to sustain the efforts.

The project is to raise 50000 to 75000 seedlings of selected 25 species of riparian plants through ex-situ nurseries and maintain it for two years and hand it over BMCs at Grama Panchayath level. An extensive survey would be carried out to locate the geographical distribution and natural habitats of   these plant species. Information about the fruiting season of these species needs to be learned and planning for collection has to be devised accordingly. Later after collection, the planting materials would be grown and maintained in the nursery of MSSRF CAbC. Up on attaining the stage planting at field, the planting materials would be handed over to BMCs. Simultaneously, BMCs and PRIs representatives would be sensitised to take up eco-restorative activities and to implement the activities in a most effective way. The services and collaboration of different development stakeholders in the field would be garnered to the smooth and effective implementation of the project.
