Molecular and eco-physiological assessment of root spectrum traits required for seedling establishment under salinity and performance under heterogenous salinity in the extremophile mangrove species, Avicennia marina

Funding agency: DST-ANRF-CRG

Location: Plant Molecular Biology Lab, MSSRF, Chennai

Project Period: Feb, 2022 -Feb, 2025

Description:

The role of roots in anchorage and establishment of A. marina seedlings has implications for growth in tidal mudflats and subsequent species propagation. The performance of A. marina under heterogeneous salinity can simulate conditions in mangrove ecosystems to a limited extent, allowing for data extrapolation. Effects of heterogeneous salinity on A. marina root traits will be mapped. The project will also map the temporal and/or spatial organization of root emergence in A. marina using biochemical, morpho-anatomic and transcriptomic methods.
